Celiac disease basics

Celiac disease is a chronic digestive and immune disorder triggered by gluten. A barcode tool can support package-label reading, but it cannot diagnose a condition or decide whether a food is safe for an individual.

What celiac disease is

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, celiac disease can damage the small intestine and interfere with nutrient absorption. Symptoms vary and some people have no symptoms. Digestive symptoms and symptoms outside the digestive system can have many possible causes, so they do not diagnose celiac disease on their own.

Why diagnosis comes first

If you suspect celiac disease, talk with a clinician before making major dietary changes. Clinicians use medical and family history, an exam, and medical tests when evaluating celiac disease. Starting a gluten-free diet before testing can affect the evaluation, so ask your clinician what to do first.

Where the scanner fits

Celiac Check looks for selected terms in an available product listing. It cannot detect gluten, assess cross-contact, interpret a medical diagnosis, or replace the current package label. Use it to make label reading faster, then verify the item in front of you.

Get urgent help for an emergency. For persistent symptoms, a suspected allergy, or questions about a gluten-free diet, seek advice from an appropriate qualified clinician or registered dietitian.
